Pilates On Collins
Pilates on Collins began in 2002. It was the first Pilates Studio in the Melbourne CBD and was born of a desire to offer a high quality Pilates service using only trained instructors, quality equipment and a limited class size. It is unlikely that large gyms with questionably trained Pilates staff and large class sizes, offer a true Pilates experience.

Pilates and Physiotherapy
For those with injuries and in particular spinal pain, Pilates on Collins utilizes the latest physiotherapy research to facilitate strength gains in those muscle groups that have been found to aid spinal stability and give your back the protection it needs. Many of our physiotherapy patients progress from active treatment to Pilates.

Q1. I have an injury. Will Pilates (‘pe-lah-tees’) be appropriate? Will it help me?
Pilates encourages you to work slowly, with precision and control and to be attentive to how your body is feeling. This gentle nature makes Pilates ideal for people who suffer from any type of injury, including back, neck, hip, knee and shoulder injuries. Many injuries are caused or perpetuated by poor posture, poor alignment or imbalances in muscular strength and flexibility. Pilates addresses all of these issues with specific strengthening and stretching exercises. Your response to the exercises is constantly monitored. Your technique is constantly supervised. This makes Pilates-based exercises very safe. At Pilates on Collins, we know that every person has different needs and we pride ourselves on giving individualised attention to each client. Being closely supervised by a well-trained instructor or physiotherapist will ensure that you are encouraged to perform only those exercises that are appropriate for you.
Q2. What happens in the initial session?
In the initial session, your instructor will discuss your goals, strengths and weaknesses, medical and injury history and activity level with you. The instructors will then explain the main principles of the Pilates method, such as ‘neutral spine’, breathing and abdominal/pelvic floor engagement. You will be taken through some very gentle exercises to give you a further understanding of these principles. You will not work very hard in the first session as it our opportunity to assess your response to Pilates and for you to learn the ‘basics’. This creates a foundation for every Pilates exercise you will ever perform.
Q3. What type of exercises are performed?
Exercises are performed on padded benches, Swiss balls and on specialised equipment, such as the reformer, the trapeze table and the Wunda chair. Exercises are done with precision and control under close supervision. The aims are to improve strength (especially spinal and abdominal strength), flexibility and posture. Pilates-based exercises may also reduce the likelihood of further injury and improve athletic performance.
Q4. Can I claim for Pilates on my private health insurance?
Most insurance companies will cover Pilates sessions if you have cover for extras. The best thing to do is to check with your private health insurer. You cannot claim Pilates as physiotherapy.
Q5. What do I have to wear?
Comfortable, light clothing is best. It can be roomy or closer fitting. We encourage you to work in socks. Bring a water bottle if you like.
Q6. Do you have a change room and toilets?
Yes. To ensure you use your session time most effectively we suggest you arrive 5-10 minutes before your session time if you need to change out of your work clothes.
